How will tribal data be used?
The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) has provided JRSA with Part 1 violent crime data and
direct cost data from its annual Law Enforcement Surveys. A total of 211 agencies
representing 148 tribes have submitted data.
In some instances, duplicate data were in the files for some tribes. These were handled
as follows:
1. Data from the FBIs UCR program are chosen over the BIA data because the UCR
program includes data checking that the BIA program does not; also, the legislation
specifies that UCR data be used.
2. Previous years' data already in the formula files are used if the current BIA effort was
nonresponse for the tribe, or the data were otherwise missing from the BIA file.
3. The BIA data from the most recent survey files are used instead of any
non-UCR data that are already in the files.
