Frequencies of Reported Locations

The 1999 NIBRS file contains 2,314,396 offenses from 18 states.  All of the possible offense locations occur in the file.  For all offenses, the vast majority occur at residences (42%).  The frequencies for each location are presented below.

Frequencies of Locations for Violent Offenses

The picture is similar for violent offenses (murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault).  There are 115,784 violent offenses, and when only these offenses are selected, the most frequent offense location is again home/residence.  The largest increase is in offenses occurring on highways/roads/alleys.

Since location is a required field, there are no missing data for this variable.  However, since the FBI does not break "Unknown" out from "Other" locations, it is not possible to determine how many offenses occurred in unknown locations.  Since the categories are comprehensive and should account for about 99% of the occurrences, either the remaining entries in the Other/Unknown category are unknown or are miscoded.
