Available Data
There are currently several national criminal justice data files available to the public. Although not specific to domestic or sexual violence, these data sets often contain related information. These data do not provide identifying information but can be used for general and aggregate analysis.
Please note that JRSA is not responsible for the collection of the data linked to from this page. Each agency is responsible for determining the accuracy of the data presented. JRSA is also not responsible for ensuring that data are collected or released in a timely manner. If you have questions or issues with the data, please contact the appropriate agency.
National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) Data
NIBRS data are released annually by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Unlike summary data, NIBRS data provide detailed information on the offense, victim(s), offender(s), arrestee(s), and property involved in an offense incident. NIBRS data are available from the the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD). To access the data, go to the NACJD National Incident-Based Reporting System Resource Guide. Data can either be analyzed using the Data Analysis System or downloaded. For more information on NIBRS, visit What Is NIBRS?
NIBRS data can also be accessed via the Easy Access to NIBRS: Victims of Domestic Violence page. This page allows users to select data elements and create quick and easy tables directly on the Web site. /
National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) Data
NCVS data are collected twice a year by the Census Bureau as funded by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). Using a representative sample of residential addresses, phone surveys collect information on the number and types of crimes experienced by household members. To access the data, go to the NACJD National Crime Victimization Survey Resource Guide. Data can either be analyzed or downloaded.
CDC Firearm Injury Surveillance Study (FISS) Data
Data for the CDC Firearm Injury Surveillance Study are collected as part of the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). In June 1992, CDC established an interagency agreement with CPSC to begin collecting data on nonfatal firearm-related injuries to monitor the incidence and characteristics of persons with nonfatal firearm-related injuries treated in hospitals. Data are available from NACJD, Study 4353.
National Consortium on Violence Research (NCOVR)
NIBRS, NCVS and FISS data can also be accessed via the NCOVR Data Center. The Data Center maintains these data sets, as well as the Decennial Census and some incident-based city data. Data are analyzed using COGNOS cubes.
CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)
The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is the world's largest, on-going telephone health survey system, tracking health conditions and risk behaviors in the United States yearly since 1984. Conducted by the 50 state health departments as well as those in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin IslandsDC, BRFSS provides state-specific information about health issues and also includes optional modules on intimate partner violence and sexual assault. The data collected in these modules are not currently availabe from the CDC Web site.
Court Statistics Project
The National Center for State Courts has developed an online search tool that includes data on domestic relations.
The Benchmark City Survey was originally designed in 1997 by a group of police chiefs from around the country. The survey provides a wide range of information about each department. Offense rates are presented, including domestic violence. 2007 participants will include Alameda, CA; Bellevue, WA; Boca Raton, FL; Boulder, CO; Broken Arrow, OK; Coral Springs, FL; Edmond, OK; Fort Collins, CO; Fremont, CA; Garland, TX; Irving, TX; Lincoln, NE; Naperville, IL; Norman, OK; Olathe, KS; Overland Park, KS; Plano, TX; Richardson, TX; and Syracuse, NY.
Study Data
Data collected for specific domestic and sexual violence studies are also available. Please follow the links for more information and to access the data.
